CIRCOLO VELA BELLANO (CVB)
BELLANO SAILING CLUB
The history began in 1970 when, on the initiative of a group of sailing enthusiasts, Circolo Vela Bellano (CVB) was founded with the purpose to promote and develop our beloved sport, until then not so much popular in the region. Since its birth, CVB was always very dynamic, in particular assuring a special care to the growth of young sailors and keeping receptive of novelties, new boats classes, such as the catamarans which were introduced to the lake by some club members when this class was practically still unknown elsewhere.
In the early years the Club received the status of official member by the Italian Sailing Federation (FIV), what gave the succeeding Boards of Directors further impulse to expand the overall activity.
The Club has a Sailing School authorized by FIV and is recognized by the Italian Olympic Committee (CONI) as a Sport Promoting Center.
In the years, CVB has proudly relaunched one of the most antique regatta run in Italy, the ‘Coppa Bellano’, a prestigious sailing event dated 1901 which saw the participation in its history of more than 150 keel-boats, once reserved to ‘Yachts of any weight and kind’ and today open to ORC boats, dinghies and catamarans.
With more than 300 members, with significant facilities on place and with a longtime experience, CVB is the leading member of ‘Multilario’, the association of Lake Como sailing clubs established for boosting synergies in the organization of larger events on the lake. CVB is a member of the association of sailing clubs Lega Italiana Vela (LIV), which makes part of the international Sailing Champions League active in 14 European countries.
The Club is located in Bellano, the picturesque village on the Lake Como eastern shore, an ideal place for its meteo conditions which assure thermal winds with moderate and regular speed especially during the summer season and practically the whole year round.
The Nautical Base has a 4000 m2 ground and hosts various classes of members’ boats. It has a technical covered area, complete of sanitary and dressing rooms, and grass with benches to rest. The Rotary Crane can load up to 2.5 ton boats.
A Floating Pier is available for assisting disable persons to use their boats. Three slipways, oriented to North, West and South, do allow boats to be launched and hauled under any wind direction. In 2017 a Mooring Area with 32 buoys was constructed to welcome keel-boats for national and international regattas, the only such facility available on the lake.
Close to the Nautical Base, the Club House hosts the Secretary Office, the Lounge for members and guests, a multipurpose Sitting Room open to the needs on schedule and a Kitchen Room.
The Terrace on the dockyard offers a nice view of the landscape.
The nearby ‘Pavillon Palasole’, owned by the municipality, can host a few hundred people during CVB top events.
And the Lake Como surroundings do not need any comment. While sailors are engaged in the competition, their companions have a wide choice for their touristic experience of the day: a visit to historical Bellano, a short climb to the hills for a picture, or in a few minutes reach the beautiful Varenna by car or by train, or take a ferry to the famous cities of Bellagio, Menaggio, Tremezzo, and much more…
The official Race Calendar includes 10 to 15 events every year, at regional, national and international grade, open to all classes from Optimist to Dinghies to Keel-boats.
The Club dedicates much effort to the development of the Sailing School. In Optimist and Laser classes, the athletes of the Agonistic Team have reached top positions in Italian, European and World Championships. Thanks to the intense activity and to the good results of its champions, CVB is considered - nationwide and internationally – one of the most proficient clubs to learn and practice sailing to the top level.
CVB has skill and devotion to the organization of quality regattas.
All international classes, wiling to run their championship in a nice and reliable location, are welcome. About 40 keel-boats can be hosted on the water, and possibly more, also in the high season.
